Welcome to Photography by Susan White and Mark O'Connell.
We're glad you found us on your mobile device.
We are a low volume-high quality photography studio and gallery, located in a historic antique colonial with a beautifully landscaped outdoor park. Here we create relaxed, natural portraits both indoors and outdoors.
Susan White
Susan started her photography apprenticeship at age fifteen. She then went on to study her art at the New England Institute of Professional Photography. In 1975 she opened her first studio in Quincy, MA.
Ms. White won her first award for excellence in photography at the 1977 Boston Phoenix photo exhibition. Since that time, she has won first place blue ribbons in the Duxbury, North River, Pembroke and Norwell Art Association juried shows. She has earned the Cape Cod Times "award for excellence", as well as top honors from the Professional Photographers of New England. Ms White has been accepted as "gallery artist", at both the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset and the prestigious Copley Art Society on Newbury Street in Boston.
She recently earned both the degree of "Certified Professional Photographer" and "Master of Photography" from the Professional Photographers of America, the largest international organization of image makers in the world. These degrees are awarded to a chosen few for superior photographic competence demonstrated through national photo competitions and continued advanced education.
Her work has been displayed in many one woman photo exhibits and art shows. The Fuji Film Company has recently entered Susan into the elite group of Fuji Masterpiece Award recipients in the outstanding children's portrait category.
Mark O'Connell
Mark 's love of photography began at the age of sixteen, where in high school he was the photographer and editor for his school's yearbook. There he learned about photographing people by covering many of the sporting events for the local newspaper. He photographed his first wedding at the age of only seventeen, which officially started his professional career. He has been successfully photographing high school seniors at his studio in Raynham, Ma. for the last 25 years, and just recently joined forces with his wife Susan at their new studio in Norwell,MA.
Mark has been awarded numerous awards for his images, including a Court of Honor award presented from the Professional Photographers of New England. Valuing the importance of continued education, Mark is a member of Professional Photographers of Massachusetts, Senior Photographers International, and an alumni of New England Institute of Professional Photography. Over the past five years Mark has been giving seminars to other professional photographers.
Our maternity sessions are only the beginning of the amazing portraits we will create together.
We offer both color and classic black and white images of you, your husband or even another child in a private, one hour session with Susan and a female assistant.
We have several silky, flowing outfits you can wear to show your belly off, or you can wear a simple outfit of your own. You can be as daring or shy as you feel comfortable with! We show you many samples of poses before the session to discuss what you like.
We offer these sessions at either a one time price, or as part of a “Baby's first year” package. Many moms like to put these images in a small album that they can add newborn portraits to.
Your new baby!
There's something pretty precious about a peaceful, sleeping baby, so we start with those images. Tiny fingers, toes, ears, noses, etc., make great "Precious Parts" panels, so we'll get those as well.
The contrast between baby's tiny little hands and your hands can be wonderful, so even if you don't want the rest of you in the photographs we love to capture these as well. However, we suggest a beautiful "mother and baby" portrait, sensitively posed to hide any extra "baby weight" you might be concerned about!
We love to show the relationship between baby and parents - the feeling of your new baby nestled in your arms, and the look on your faces as you gaze at this new little miracle you've created. The newborn session is typically done before the baby is 3 weeks old, to capture that absolute newborn look. We always schedule these sessions for at least one hour, so we can take all the time we need to create some wonderful images. If the baby needs time to be fed, held or reassured, it's no problem.
Classic and Whimsical portraits of Children by award winning photographer Susan White.
Let us capture your childs' special sparkle in portraits that will become a "treasure of the heart". They will change and grow but their portraits will forever preserve them at various ages.
We always schedule enough time to allow your children to become comfortable and to have fun. We work with an assistant that knows how to play with your child, and get their attention, while we stay behind the camera and concentrate on capturing the perfect expression.
Our collection of child size antique furniture and toys adds a pictorial charm to many of the portraits we create both in studio and outdoors in our one acre photo park. If desired, we're happy to provide classic clothing and fun hats and headbands that add to the creation of a great portrait. Our studio has specialized in photographing children of all ages for over twenty years, and have won many national awards with images of our clients. We are proud to say that four of our portraits were published in Fujifilm's " Children's Portrait Awards" book. We often give seminars to other professional photographers about photographing children and families.
If you desire a true work of art of your children, look no further than Photography by Susan White & Mark O'Connell.
We create pieces of art featuring your family. Our goal is for you to enjoy these portraits as decor in your home for many years to come.
There is nothing more priceless than a family portrait. Often we get wrapped up in today's busy world and forget what's really important.
In this day and age with the demanding schedules we keep our lives go by so quickly and our families change before our eyes. Over the years we have heard of all the reasons clients put off having their family portraits done, such as waiting to lose those extra ten pounds or not wanting the stress of coordinating clothing and schedules of everyone.
We can help you with that. We offer you a relaxing pre-planning session where Susan sits down with you a few weeks before your session and shows you different samples and styles of family portraits taken both inside and outside with various color combinations and styles, both classic and casual. That way she knows exactly what your tastes are and what colors will coordinate beautifully with your home. We make it as painless as possible for everyone, we promise! Start your family's photographic legacy today!
Engaged?
Congratulations! Love is a wonderful thing, and now that you've found that "special someone", and decided to tie the knot, you'll want to capture all the excitement with a portrait to give to those you love. We take both indoor studio and outdoor casual, fun and romantic images. We also offer custom designed "save the date cards" featuring these images. Let Susan or Mark be your personal photographer to create that feeling you both share.
Soon to be Bride?
If you're the Bride and you've picked out that "perfect" gown for your wedding day, don't you think that a classic portrait showing you beautifully portrayed in your dress would be wonderful displayed in your home? All too often candid's in the dress are quickly done on the wedding day, when the pressure of the event makes them rushed and not as beautiful as they could be. Setting aside a few hours before the wedding day to come to the studio for a bridal portrait will allow you to get everything just perfect, and also makes a great "dress rehearsal" of your wedding day to work out all the "kinks" you might run into!
Call the studio well in advance of your wedding day so that you will be able to display your portrait at the wedding reception if desired, as a real treat for all your guests to see!
Don't leave to chance getting a great portrait of you in your gown to the day of the wedding, call the professional portrait artists of Susan White and Mark O'Connell for an appointment.

Portrait Creation Fees
Each of Susan's portrait sessions normally last between one hour to an hour and a half. Sometimes it will be less, or slightly longer, particularly with large family groups.
Once Susan has identified the best outdoor location either in our Victorian gazebo, flower gardens or woodlands, based on lighting, background and environmental compositions, she will guide you through the portrait session, making sure everyone looks their best.
During this time she will help everyone relax, allowing their true personality to come through! Indoors we use soft window light, with hand painted backgrounds for a painterly quality.
The creation fee covers a minimum of one hour photography time both inside the studio and outdoors with Susan and her assistant, at which time we take over fifty images to choose from.
This fee also includes a separate presentation appointment to view your images in a projected slide show set to music. This is scheduled about a week after the session and lasts a minimum of one hour.
Individual Adult Session: (1-2 adults) $139.00
Child Session: (1 child) $149.00 2 children $169
Family Session: (3 to six subjects) $195.00
Prices quoted for larger groups.

Preparing For Your Portrait
A beautiful portrait is an investment that requires pre-planning. Our portraits just don’t happen by accident - it is the result of a desire to create a portrait that will be cherished for years. Communication of goals, yours and ours plays an essential part in the creation of the final image.
If possible, we would like to have you make an appointment to meet with us, and plan your session ideas and clothing choices. Your portrait will be enhanced with the proper attire.
We encourage both formal and informal changes of clothing. Dress for full length and be sure to coordinate socks, shoes, hats and jewelry. Just as you would decorate your wall with a fine art painting, your portrait should be carefully designed. For example, the colors in your family room should be repeated in the portrait, if that is the room you are planning on hanging it in. When deciding what to wear, you should take this into consideration.
Also think about whether you need a horizontal or a vertical image to fit into your space. Bring a variety of possibilities and we will help you select the outfits which are best. Many of the images you see both on our web site and in our portrait displays in the studio and other locations illustrate children’s clothing that we have provided. We know what will give a timeless classic look to your portraits, and also what will coordinate with our varied backgrounds and props. However, we also encourage you to bring your favorite outfits in addition!
After you schedule a session with us we'll send you a clothing brochure as a guide.
All portrait sessions must be prepaid to reserve your requested appointment.
The day of your session a payment of $200, which applies toward your order is requested.
A 50% payment is required to initiate a portrait order and payment in full upon completion. No refunds or changes can be made after final order is placed.
Clients who request picking up partial orders must have the order paid in full.
We accept all major credit cards.
For Your Information . . .
All of our portraits include standard retouching which removes blemishes, under eye circles, and slight facial imperfections. Enhanced retouching is included on all 16x20 and larger portraits, which could include fixing stray hairs, whitening teeth, enhancing eyes, and softening skin. Most studios charge a premium for these extras services, however we include them at no extra cost to you.
